In one of the highest-profile TV projects to come out of post-bankruptcy MGM, the studio has teamed with The Tudors and Camelot masterminds Michael Hirst and Morgan O’Sullivan for Vikings (working title), a drama series about the famous Scandinavian warriors. Hirst, creator of Showtime’s The Tudors and co-creator of Starz’s Camelot, created Vikings and will executive produce with Irish-based producer O’Sullivan and producers/managers Sherry Marsh and Alan Gasmer. The series is eyed to begin production on a 10-episode first season next year at O’Sullivan’s soon-to-open studio facility in Ireland. It will be an Ireland-Canada co-production in the mold of O’Sullivan’s production model for The Tudors and Camelot. MGM, which has been involved in the development of the project, will finance 100% of the cost outside of Canada and Ireland and will distribute the series in the U.S. and internationally. Vikings is considered better suited for cable, and, because of the appetite for big, historic epics on pay TV, a pay cable play appears likely.

The idea for a Viking series started with Marsh, who took it to fellow producer/manager Gasmer. The two pitched it to MGM EVP International TV Distribution Chris Ottinger, who suggested taking the international co-production route and brought in O’Sullivan. O’Sullivan called up frequent collaborator and avid historian Hirst, who turned out to be a Viking buff and had written an unproduced feature script about the famous barbarians years ago. Hirst is working on a bible for the series and is expected to write most or all episodes. (He famously wrote every single episode of The Tudors.) The series will chronicle the Vikings’ exploits as warriors, explorers, builders, merchants, pirates and mercenaries through what is known as the Viking Age of Scandinavian, British and Irish history from the late-8th to the mid-11th century. It will center on Ragnar Lodbrok, one of the most popular Viking heroes, a great commander who briefly ruled Denmark and Sweden and was linked to two shieldmaidens and a queen.

The Tudors was a show that took us back into the time of kings, how they maintained their rule, took care of political matters, defeated their enemies in battles and at the same time took care of their lavish personal lives.

The Tudors episodes focused on the reign of King Henry VIII of England, played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers. Main lead was the king and the series had other star cast also which included several wives or love interests of the king namely, Katherine of Aragon (Maria Doyle Kennedy), Anne Boleyn (Natalie Dormer), Jane Seymour (Annabelle Wallis), Anne of Cleves (Joss Stone), Katherine Howard (Tamzin Merchant) and Katherine Parr (Joely Richardson). The Tudors Review: Series Finale

Posted by:   in The Tudors News · Comments Comments Off

I am anxious to hear what all of you thought about this final episode
of The Tudors.  I have to say I enjoyed it despite my deep and profound disappointment over not seeing Surrey get hanged, drawn, and quartered.  What a letdown!  People who watch this show have become accustomed to seeing some serious violence and I don’t think the last episode was any exception.

Couldn’t they have left us with one little gory execution to cling to?

This was the episode of the Dead and Angry Baby Mamas.  The wives who had given children to King Henry showed up throughout this episode as visions, sort of like a combination between “Six Feet Under” and “Scrooged.”  They all came to berate Henry for being such a sucky father to their various spawn.  Here are their beefs in a nutshell:

  • Katherine of Aragon:  Our daughter should be married off by now with her own kids and I’m still your real wife, so says Jesus!
  • Anne Boleyn:  My daughter is ten times smarter than you and, by the way, I am still innocent.  Oh, and so is Catherine Howard.
  • Jane Seymour:  Sorry, darling, but our kid is going to die young and it’s probably for the best because you’ve made his life totally suck from the moment he was born.

062110 0823 TheTudorsRe1 The Tudors Review: Series Finale

I got so excited to see all these dead ladies as soon as I saw them in the opening credits.  I was like, “Yay!  The dead queens are back!”  But I was sad not to see Catherine Howard in all her bare-boobed glory and Joss Stone (whatever her Queen name was, who cares) with her fakey German accent in tow.

I know she’s not dead but it doesn’t mean I was any less pumped to see her.  I also loved that the Queens were upset with Henry rather than being all fawny and lovey as they were when they were regulars on the show.  They’re already dead so why not talk a little trash?

Now that we are talking about the Royal wifies and chilluns, let me just make a side note here:  I HATE, HATE, HATE when they substitute one kid for another playing the same person to show us that the kid is getting older.  This is the old Chrissy Seever trick from “Growing Pains.”

Remember when that kid went from being a newborn one season to being a second grader the next?  Talk about discombobulating.  Tonight we saw Prince Edward get about three years older than he was in the last episode.  I can’t stand that!  I know they are trying to help give us a sense of his approximate age when his pop croaked but it still bothers me.  I get rather attached to TV children, I’ll admit it.  I don’t like seeing them go away and transform into a totally different human being without any warning.

I always have to pause The Lion King right before baby Simba turns into teenager Simba just to savor that last, precious moment.  Not that I watch The Lion King regularly or anything.  Don’t judge.

I feel like I learned a very useful line from tonight’s episode.  Remember when Queen Catherine (the current one) is trying to save her ass from the chopping block and she says to the King, “I am but a woman with all the imperfections natural to the weakness of my sex”?  This is a good one!  I am going to whip this line out next time I get pulled over or get called out for doing anything bad.

I’ll say it when I’m late for work, when I don’t have enough money to tip the valet parking guy, when I accidentally rear-end someone in traffic, whenever!  I think it will help me out of some sticky situations.  It sure helped Catherine!

062110 0823 TheTudorsRe2 The Tudors Review: Series Finale

I am a sucker for montages set to music and tonight’s episode had a good one.  I have to admit that I get chills whenever old scenes from shows are matched with sad music.  I get all misty and it makes me want to go back and watch the show from the beginning all over again.  I really loved seeing all his kids when they were little but, even more than that I loved seeing sexy Jonathan Rhys Meyers as the young King.  And also, Hottie McHotterson Charles Brandon with him!

We got to see both these guys die as yucky old codgers tonight and it was really nice to see them as hot youngsters for a brief instant. It took us back to the good ole days when the show was new.

Overall, I liked this last episode.  It wrapped up most of the plotlines neatly yet made me feel a strong desire to go buy a big, heavy book about England post-Henry VIII so I can find out more.  What are your thoughts about the conclusion of this show?  Any comments or feelings to share?

Clips of ‘The Tudors’ Season 4 Episode 9: King Henry Aging

Posted by:   in Uncategorized · Comments Comments Off

The Tudors” will come back Sunday, June 13 before wrapping the whole series the next week. In the episode taking place between 1544 to 1546, King Henry is seen aging rapidly. His ulcerous leg is constantly in pain and he now requires glasses to read.

060910 0940 ClipsofTheT1 Clips of The Tudors Season 4 Episode 9: King Henry Aging

One clip from the episode reveals Queen Catherine showing Henry a book she wrote and dedicated to him. The other clip sees the King in the court room, criticizing his clergy and noblemen for discord, malice and envy.

Political events continue to be tumultuous and exhausting. The profligate Earl of Surrey, a noble not known for his sense of judgment, loses 600 men in an unprovoked battle in France, endangering Henry’s recent success in Boulogne. News arrives that the King of France is preparing for war and worse, the Emperor Charles – England’s recent ally – has seized English ships and properties.

Other things to be found in the episode are the rising influence of Bishop Gardiner who is determined to trap Queen Catherine, and Earl of Surrey who is sentenced to death on charges of treason in a one-sided trial.

The Tudors Review: The King as a Real Housewife

Posted by:   in The Tudors News · Comments Comments Off

Though I do like this show a lot and have watched it faithfully since the first season, I am beginning to feel like the finale can’t come too soon.  Am I alone in thinking that it’s getting pretty boring as things wind down to a conclusion?

I know that the writers are attempting to be historically accurate and therefore have to include all this information about England’s war with France, as well as his new plain yogurt wife.  But, honestly, none of it is particularly compelling.  It’s nowhere near as exciting as some of the other plotlines we’ve seen and so that feels like a bit of a letdown to me.  I miss the guillotines and the Tower of London and the teenage brides!

I long for the days of Anne Boleyn and of people sleeping with each other’s relatives and of heinous acts of torture.  That was infinitely more fun.

060710 1906 TheTudorsRe1 The Tudors Review: The King as a Real Housewife

However, I will say that I found this episode’s focus
on the plight of the English soldiers fascinating. These poor men are inflicted with raging cases of dysentery while simultaneously starving to death. They scrounge around for crusts of bread like Victorian orphans and try to avoid getting tossed into a mass grave while their leaders enjoy lavish meals of fresh fruit, meat, and jugs of wine.

That is one loyal army you have there, King Henry.  No one would blame them if they got the idea to mutiny over this food situation and their crummy leadership.  But they don’t.  Many of them die and what is worse is that they die without the King really even acknowledging that they have a legitimate illness.

When the poor battlefield physician comes to tell Henry about the dire current status of “the bloody flux” the King goes all Teresa from The Real Housewives of New Jersey

on him – flipping a table and having a meltdown.  He screams, “These men are not sick from the flux but from cowardess and I will not send cowards home!  They will either fight or I will hang them by the wayside!  You get them from their sick beds and back into that trench or I’ll make you a head shorter!”

I love that he calls these men cowards.  They’re out there busting their asses for his stupid war and he doesn’t have an ounce of respect toward them.  I’d like to see how he’d fare out on the battlefield.  We all know he’d be cowering under the closest wheelbarrow within the first three minutes, that is if he didn’t get an immediate arrow through the neck.

And let’s pause for a moment to mull over the King’s current attitude.  His ever-present sneer makes it look like he is constantly smelling something bad.  He either screams or speaks in a growling, strained whisper and, as the episode goes on, his mumblings become increasingly incomprehensible.  Getting in and out of chairs requires lots of grunting and huffing and he walks as stiffly as I do when I’ve sat on the couch all day watching a marathon of old
Project Runway episodes.  It’s high time for him to be shot like a lame horse.  Someone put him out of his (and our) misery, please.

Also, the aging effects they are using on Jonathan Rhys Meyers leave a bit to be desired, don’t they?  I swear the only “effect” seems to be that Touch of Gray men’s hair dye and, of course, the unreliable fakey limp I mentioned in my last review.  Hello – at least make him look wrinkly or warty or craggy or something!

Look at movies like A Beautiful Mind or The Curious Case of Benjamin Button where makeup artists managed to make handsome young men look like creaky old grandpas.  This show seems to have a substantial budget; surely more could be done on this front.

In other news, it was no secret that a romantic attraction would brew between Charles Brandon and his captured French lady soldier.  (By the way, what is her name?  Am I missing it?  I don’t think it’s been mentioned but please correct me if I am wrong.)  She looks pretty damn good for someone who was dressing like a boy, engaging in hand-to-hand combat in the dirt, roughly captured, stuffed in a tent as a prisoner, and denied weeks’ worth of bucket baths.

Not only is her hair perfectly coiffed but, by some miracle, her eyebrows are immaculately plucked despite a total lack of mirrors and tweezers. Ladies, we all know how impossible this is.  They’re hard enough to maintain with all the conveniences of the modern world! Can I get an amen?

I love when this chick says in her sultry French accent, “Why do you keep me?”  Brandon’s like, “Schwing!”  And then they have sex, of course, and it looks totally erotic.  If this actually happened in reality, I think it would have been the opposite of hot because you know both of them probably had intense B.O. and her armpit and leg hair was probably three inches long.  But, whatever, they appear to be smitten and she seems so excited with her new man that she wants to move to England with him when the war is over.  Even though he’s already married.

You can’t really blame the girl, though. Charles Brandon is probably the cutest guy on the show.  I hope they’ll be happy together in his manor home forever trying to avoid his frigid wife.  Good luck with that.

Moving on.  I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again:  Poor, poor Lady Mary.  Her newest crisis is that her close bud Ambassador Chapuis is getting out of dodge and moving back to Spain.  Bienvenidos! Honestly, I do feel bad for this girl.  She has had so few long-term and trustworthy relationships and this one is close to her heart and is now ending.

Chapuis tries to comfort Mary by reminding her that Queen Catherine is very loving toward her but Mary doesn’t want to be left with Catherine because she’s a heretic.  Religion is Mary’s priority numero uno and anyone who isn’t Catholic is on Mary’s shit list, nice as they may be.  Mary says that if she ever becomes Queen she will make it her greatest agenda to restore England to Catholicism.

Methinks a spin-off is afoot!  She says, “I will do whatever it takes.  I will burn however many heretics I have to.  I will spill as much blood as I have to to make this unfortunate realm Catholic again and to heal it, so help me God.”  Ah, the prospect of mass murder to please God is such a charming notion. How very Christian of you, Mary!

I have to say that when the King collapsed at the end of the episode I just started laughing.  How can I feel bad for this man?  He’s so mean and so horrible to almost everyone in his life.  It’s refreshing to see him suffer a bit.  When I watched him go down I immediately thought of that old, “Help!  I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!” commercial for Medic Alert bracelets or whatever.

Did anyone else think about that too?  It’s unfortunate that this fabulous technology was not yet available to assist the old codger.  He really could have used it.
